Church property criticized
Calling the site an “eyesore,” four residents asked Lyndeborough selectmen last week whether they could do anything about a lot on Route 31 north owned by the United Church of Lyndeborough.
Acting as spokesman for the group at the board’s Oct. 14 meeting, Clayton Brown of Perham Corner asked if the lot is a fire hazard because the debris from last year’s logging operation has not yet been cleaned up.
Brown, who is not a member of the church, said he had spoken with Fire Chief Rick McQuade.
“We went up and looked at (the site) to see if it’s a fire hazard, and Rick says it is,” Brown said. “Is there anything that can be done about it?”
He added, “There are a lot of brush piles that are pretty dry.”
Village resident Norma Walker called the lot “an eyesore,” and the others agreed that it did not make a very good impression on people coming into the village area from Greenfield.
Selectman Steve Brown noted that the site, which contains a small building designated a chapel by Pastor Paul Lemire, may require a site plan review by the Planning Board. The two Browns are not related.
Selectmen agreed that the review was “probably required,” but had not been done. Selectman Arnie Byam said he would bring it to the Planning Board’s attention. The issue has since been scheduled to be discussed at the Planning Board’s Nov. 19 meeting.
